The PD-3S is a PD-2 and SD-1 in a single unit.  The SSB adapter is a crystal controlled product detector providing selectable LSB or USB reception.  It is the successor to the popular PD-1 of several years ago.  It is available for the R390 series(455KHz IF) and R388/51J series (500KHz IF) receivers.  Other IF frequencies can be provided at $50.00 additional cost.  I have done 50KHz, 100KHz and 1MHz.  Contact me to order special frequencies.

Tuning AM Using SSB Mode By tuning AM signals using the SSB mode, some types of fading can be reduced, because the received carrier is not used.  The carrier is provided by the crystal oscillators.  Also, only one sideband is needed, so if one sideband has interferance, select the other one.  A receiver that has very good stability and selectivity is best.  The BFOs for selecting USB of LSB must be on precise frequencies for good results, so they should be crystal controlled.

The SD-1 Synchronous AM Detector improves shortwave reception by reducing the distortion caused by some kinds of frequency selective fading. It substitutes a locally generated carrier for the received carrier.  The locally generated carrier is derived from the received carrier so it is always synchronized with the incoming signal. It does not provide selectable sideband. It can be used with any IF frequency up to 1MHz.

Understand that this is not a cure all.  It is only effective with selective fades where it is the carrier that fades.  There will be many fades that it can't improve however it does not make reception any worse, so it can be used all the time.

The PD-3S connects to the receiver IF signal.  A power supply and BNC cable for connecting to the IF output jack, if available, is included.  An amplified speaker is required.  Computer speakers work well and are inexpensive. A Tube Shield Interface is available for use with vintage receivers. Simply put the interface on the last IF amplifier tube. The tubes must be the miniature type. The IF signal is capacitively coupled from the tube.
