The ESP-100 Noise Gate is designed to prevent background noise from being transmitted during pauses.  It has very fast attack time to your speech and relatively slow release.  There is no amplification in the audio path.  Your mic audio level is passed through unaffected when the gate is open.  The circuit is based on an attenuator.  When the audio level is high, there is little or no attenuation.  When the audio level is low, as it is with only background noise, the attenuation is maximum.  Actually the mic audio output level goes to zero.  It is easily configured for Icom, Kenwood, or Yaesu transceivers using a internal switch.  The standard 8 pin round connectors are used and all mic functions are supported.

The ESP-100A Noise Gate is intended for use with other rigs which don't use the standard 8 pin round connectors.  It uses an RCA plug for the mic input and a stereo phone plug for the balanced output.

Included is a unique tone equalizer circuit which provides either Bass or Treble Boost  using a single control.  Centering the control gives ruler flat response.  Turning the control tilts the response in a strait line centered at 1KHz, to enhance either the high or low audio frequencies.  Multichannel tone equalizers are unnecessary with the voice frequency range of only 300Hz to 3KHz.  It is usually only necessary to boost either the lows or highs to make your voice more intelligible.

Either feature, the Noise Gate, or the Tone Equalizer, can be used without the other.

SETUP ESP-100

Inside the unit is a six position DIP switch. (not used on the ESP-100A)
For Icom turn on switches 1, 3, 6
For Kenwood turn on switches 1, 4, 6
For Yaesu turn on switches 2, 5

Plug the cable from the ESP-100 into your transceiver and your mic into the mic connector.

SETUP ESP-100A
The RCA jack on the back of the unit is the mic input.  It is high impedance so any mic can be used.

The phone jack is a stereo type with the balanced output on the tip and sleeve.  If a two conductor plug is used, one side of the balanced output will be grounded so it will become unbalanced.  It is recommended that even if your mic input is unbalanced, you should use a stereo phone plug.  Use the tip and sleeve terminals with no ground at the ESP-100A.  If you use 2 conductor shielded cable, ground the shield at the transmitter end only.  This usually helps prevent ground loop problems.

OPERATION
There are two operating controls, the Gate Level and the Tone Equalizer.  The tone equalizer needs no explanation.

To adjust the gate level, turn the control CW to the highest level possible without the background noise causing the LED to blink.  That is the setting that is the most sensitive to your speech.  It's not at all critical unless you have a very high background noise.  Some experimenting may be necessary.  To disable the noise gate, turn the level control fully CCW.  The LED will light and your mic audio will pass through unaffected.  The tone equalizer will still be active.

When the power switch is off, the ESP-100 is bypassed.
